NEW: The book about Shura Born-Kraëff

The life of the artist Shura Born-Kraëff, who died on June 12, 2019, was so extraordinary that it simply needed to be written down and told. Our goal here is to emphasize the unique circumstances, the influences of languages, cultures, literature, music and arts that helped shape Shura into such an extraordinary woman and artist.

It is difficult to condense Shura’s fascination for the absurd, her pursuit of justice, her unconditional love for women and animals and her endless curiosity into only 100 pages. Still, while combing through more than 30,000 photos, photographed paintings and scanned sketches and drawings, we were able to recall some of our forgotten moments with her.

We have also examined old documents, postcards and letters that have been translated from Dutch to German or from Russian to English, which all add depth and scope to Shura’s incredible history.

Let’s take you on a journey where you will discover a critical, sophisticated woman who brought out the best in herself despite facing many disappointments and obstacles as she struggled to be recognized as an accomplished artist.
